Dark mode reduces eye strain in low-light environments, but the benefits go deeper. There is a psychological comfort to darker interfaces that feels less clinical, more personal.
Perception and Focus
On a dark background, light elements pop with higher perceived contrast. This can guide attention more effectively than the inverse, especially for immersive or media-heavy experiences.
The key is not simply inverting colors. True dark mode design requires rethinking contrast ratios, saturation, and elevation cues.
