The Maldives is one of the few places on Earth where manta ray encounters are virtually guaranteed during the right season. Hanifaru Bay alone can host hundreds of these gentle giants in a single day.
Gear That Matters
Wide-angle lenses are non-negotiable. A 16-35mm behind a dome port gives you the flexibility to frame both the animal and its environment. Strobes help restore color at depth, but be mindful of backscatter in plankton-rich water.
The best manta shots are not taken during the chase. They happen when you stop swimming and let the animal come to you.
Patience is the most underrated piece of equipment in your camera bag.
